Default First bear of the Season - woot!!!!

My son accompanied me on my walk yesterday and we got within 50 yds or so of a black bear taking his post hibernation stroll through the neighborhood.

What sight!

Default Oh Boy

I have pictures of a bear cub on my in-laws deck last year - in the early spring. He was pawing at the hummingbird feeder they have. And you know Mama-bear wasn't too far away.

And they wonder why I won't let my kids play in their yard without either me or my husband right behind them.

I get to see all of this in my backyard every spring. Bears, coyotes, foxes..and those pesky hawks that keep killing my birds! We had a family of foxes last year - the kittens were adorable! One of the babies (grown now) lives in a den on my hill. She pops her head out now and again eyeing up my cats. A coyote comes through every morning. At least 30 deer per day through the yard in the spring. My favorite though is the kill deer (sp?) birds that return each spring. They are the funniest birds. They nest on the ground and I have to mow around them each season. Once the babies are born, they do not fly for a good 4 months and the day they finally do, it's funny to watch because they keep going higher and higher until mom or dad fly up to bring them back down - coolest birds...well until those pesky hawks fly down and snatch them up.

It is. I tried to pull you this way but you were stuck on Franklin : )) But if you ever want to venture out from Stokes, take a drive to Warren County - north of Rt. 80...north of Rt. 94.. it's absolutely gorgeous! Could do with a few less hawks though... I hate it when I'm looking at a really pretty bird pulling worms from my front yard and "woosh - one less bird and just a poof of feathers!" They got one of my kill deers last year - I was very sad... she was nesting - had 4 eggs..went to check on her one day and both her and the eggs were gone : ( And the remaining bird, flew around for days calling his spouse..broke my heart! Good news is, there's a new couple in town so i will keep a safe watch on them... try to keep the grass longer and wider where they have their nest.
