I'm so glad you made it out alive and hope that the violent predators will receive real justice on your behalf. Please get well.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind words and support. I've started my search for a new place and hope to be out of Newark very soon. I have to heal first and get back to normal life. I was planning on taking my vacation days next month and travel somewhere, but I'm going to use my vacation days now and just stay home.
Thanks again to all!!!

I hope you have a fast recovery and find a nice home .Don't go to Elizabeth either, also not so safe.
My son lives in Old Bridge in a Garden Apt Complex, nice safe area, and not pricy compared to other apts we looked at.

Hoping for a fast recovery!
However, for those who want Bernie Goetz and firearms....well, I respectfully disagree.

the biggest yellers that think Newark is "up and coming" are the one who don't/won't live there. no different than the people nationwide who scream to rebuild new orleans the way it was and bring EVERYONE back... go live there and decide if you want EVERYONE back or if Newark is really "up and coming"
I worked there in the mid to late 90s for several years before I wised up. It sucked then, it sucked now and it's getting worse.
R_P I hope you're ok

for the OP, I do hope you recover.

Oh, but it is linked to the city. When there's an event at these venues, half the friggin police force is there protecting the outsiders that are "in and out," instead of the residents of the city. And the money would've been better spent on beefing up the undermanned police force and developing programs for residents.

Diane G, why point out Elizabeth? have you lived there? besides Elizabeth is 100 times better than Newark (IMO) just b/c there is a large number of hispanics does not make it bad.. I have had no issues in my neighborhood.... I'm sure there is crime in Old Bridge where white are the majority, but that does not make it bad.. anyone can be a victim anywhere.. Newark has a higher risk..
-not to compare it to any other city.. just to show that there is crime everywhere.. Moderator cut: link to a competitors site removed
Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 74. The number of murders and homicides was 2. The violent crime rate was 1.2 per 1,000 people.

sure there is crime in Old Bridge, just not on the scale of places like Newark, you don't need to live in fear like you do in newark

I'm so so sorry for your experiences. It's horrible. I know how you feel first hand because I've been a victim more than 3 times to a violent crime in Newark and so has my family.....and we were "part of the community" - and were victimized. The police did nothing. They pulled out 5 books, let me look through pictures and sent me on my way-closing the case each time because I couldn't identify the perpetrators.
Actually my son did a great job on his NJ Ask and I wanted to get him a Devils Jersey so I went to Newark yesterday (Sunday) and the fear I felt walking down there. I will say I have the same fear in Jersey City, Trenton and even Manhattan - but in the last topic about Newark, some posters were saying "you're over exaggerating" - Newark isn't that bad". It is. Maybe it's not as bad as Detroit, or as bad as Camden or Trenton or Philly - but it's bad.
....and as I walked down Market Street returning to my car, I used my autostarter to turn my car on. Two guys were standing next to my car looking through my windows. I pressed the panic button and they backed away. These same two guys were looking for trouble as there was an Asian guy, I'm guessing in his 20's, walking in the area towards Penn Station with his books and bookbag. These two guys were circling him and picking with him for absolutely no apparent reason - maybe becuase he was "different" - I don't know but I had to say something. I told them, "You all need to leave him alone" and they did....only going to mess with their next victim.
Newark is scary and I don't know how parents let their children walk to school alone, walk to the store alone or even play outside. You should be able to go outside at 8pm - you should be able to go outside at 11pm - but times have gotten bad everywhere, including Newark and when I lived there, I felt imprisoned in my own neighborhood. The poverty is probably the reason so many of these people live with outright hatred. They hate themselves and hate anybody who looks like they're have a "little bit more then they do."
I'm just happy your experience wasn't any worse than what it was.
