It's that time of the year when the weather starts getting warm and kid's are almost out of school. So it's time to make summer vacation plans. Whether it's fuel cost, tuition bills, home repair,or still paying off high utility bills, will this make your decision on going on that big family vacation or just staying close by. Choices we have to make.
I'd answer but you'll just run and hide from me - Mt Olive boy : ))) Actually, no need for me to travel as I have my own oasis right here in my backyard : )

Even if I had a choice, I would prefer to stay home..get the BBQ going, jump in the pool...grab a few cold ones. Now that's living! Why sit in traffic, end up in a hotel room next to a family of 18, spend all your money trying to win yet another oversized stuffed Shrek only to come home with a pair of chineses hand cuffs... : ))

Our secret is we go to the beach and walk the boardwalk now. The parking meters are not out and you can park 1 or 2 spots from the boardwalk. When the crowd comes they charge 20 bucks for you to park a car, 7 bucks for the beach and about 4 or 5 bucks for a slice of pizza. Theres no shortage of these people if you watch the traffic jams on the weekends. Us locals as we are called now(not that I want to be labeled that) do all our shopping before the weekends and then just chill out like you.
We are lucky to have a house on the beach, so we never travel during the summer. Unfortunately it is 3 hours away, but it is so worth it once we get there. We go every weekend, plus I save 4 of my vacation weeks for the summer months. My wife stays out with the kids the whole month of August, and 2 of my 4 weeks are in August. Last year my daughter went to day camp there. I can sit on the beach and when I get hot, I can literally just walk up the stairs of my deck and jump in the pool.
We should start a Thread called "Alternate Summer things to do in NJ rather than travelling" - This will give / get some great ideas for those who wish to stay close to home with their kids. Things I would recommend by me are 1. The Wolf Santuary in Knowlton 2. Swatzwood Park / Lake - you can camp - rent paddle boats or sail boats. 3. Merrill Creek - you can walk around the reservoir and check out the wild life and there's also a museum / santuary there...beach to picnic on. All cheap alternatives to travelling.
No problem hikinman - already promised you that we would take you out if you moved to the area...just make sure you bring your survival gear, it's a bit rough out here..may have to tackle a bear or two on your way in : )) But you have to bring the beer... I prefer Petes or Sams : )
