I cannot live in such a monstrosity. But it is always such a relative thing - to most I'm probably already living in one.

5BD / 3.5BTH on an acre. About 4500 sq ft. It is already a bit too big for us (my ideal luxury pad for a family of 4 would not be greater than 3400 sq ft). I've lived most of my life in apartments no larger than 1400 sq ft.

Essex county has some (tax-wise) expensive towns.

Most houses immediately around me are in the $39k -$49k range. A guy living 5 houses from me paid $149k in 2012!!!

There, feel good about your tax situation now?

2000 sq ft colonial 3 br 2.5 bath on 1.4 acres with finished basement in Jackson. We just went over $8,000 in taxes. Assessment is $381,300. I would guess depending on the market it would sell for in that range. When I did research to appeal my taxes last year I found 4 comps 1 which was in my neighborhood that sold for slightly more. So no appeal.

It would help if when you posted what your taxes were you posted what your assessment was and an estimate of what the house would sell for.

We are on well and septic

Property taxes are a funny thing. My beach house is worth many times more than what my house in NJ is worth, yet the property taxes are about the same. Long Island is not exactly a low property tax area, but the Hamptons are. The school system is regional, as well as police and other departments. Of course, services are all extra, but since most people aren't there year round, it doesn't come to that much.
