So I got a traffic ticket for “unsafe lane change” last week near the Lincoln tunnel. The officer who gave me the ticket told me that he was going to give me a break and ticket me for seatbelt violation instead. He even told me this is a 0 point violation and I can just pay online with no court appearance required. I thank the officer and left but after I got home and checked the ticket - it says “unsafe lane change” with statute 39:4-88B. I was surprised but thought maybe the system will reflect what he told me when I pay online. Unfortunately when I was going to pay, the website says the ticket is not eligible for payment and required a court appearance. I called the court and was told no appearance is needed and I can just pay $185 with two points if I wanted to. I asked about the violation and she said I will need to speak to the officer or the prosecutor on the court date for that. Anyone has similar experience or any recommendations? Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.
Tickets are used to fill municipal coffers under the guise of safety.
Look at it as subjective enforcement of the law, which breeds prejudice and mistrust of the justice system.
All the issues NJ legislators could address...and make a difference.... is the municipal ticket distribution scam.
Pay it an be on your way. The impression that a righteousness cause will carry the day is dangled like a baited hook to collect more court fees.
Only salvation is if the cop doesn't show for court. No cop, the ticket gets dropped. Show up and lose and you pay court costs.
Thousands of ticketed offenses occur every minute on our roads, that you were selected from the school of bait fish is random, unless you really screwed up.
If you are a gambler, schedule a court date as close to Thanksgiving as possible to perhaps luck out and have the cop not show.
Various methods to change it, some cost a bit of $$, others are just luck.
Some towns that handle many tickets don't even usually schedule the cop to come in the same day initially since ther handle so many tickets by switching them to the $480 unsafe driving deal.
You could speak to the prosecutor and inform him the cop said he was going to write you a seat belt instead??? See what they say.
Some people get off on the little power they have.
