I'm looking at Hackensack apartments and complexes. However, I'm not familiar with the area. Which parts of Hackensack should I avoid and which one should I move to?
I was considering a place near Anderson St because it's so close to all the shops and I'm a commuter (no car or license), so it's convenient for me. Any recommendations for particular buildings? (I found a few nice places but I read reviews online that say they have bugs, roaches, etc...)
Hackensack is pretty safe everywhere IMO. The Fairmont section is the most residential and suburban arrea. The section closer to Little Ferry by the jail and courthouse is safe, but can have a seedy feel to it...but in no way is dangerous.
Check out Carriage House apartments on Euclid and Clinton. I lived there for 8 years (from 1997 to 2005) and had no issues. It's in the Fairmount section (north Hackensack) and the NJ Transit bus runs right out front (literally a 2 minute walk if not less).
Within 5 minutes walking distance you have: TD Bank, Dunkin Donuts, 7-11, Sears, Burger King, B&W Bakery, Target etc.
I live in the Maple Hill neighborhood, and it's a wonderful area. They have apartments (maybe condos?) along the Esplanade. You have buses to NYC and local on the corner of Passaic and Esplanade. There's also a strip mall, with a 7-11, cleaners, nail salon and Chinese take out.
Fairmount Section is the nicest area. From the Rt 4 end you can walk to two Targets, Bergen Town Mall and several restaurants, laundrymats, etc. You can also easily catch the bus on the corner or walk to the New Bridge Landing train station.
I lived in Hackensack a few years ago and never felt unsafe. I walked my dog all over at all times of the day/night. Some of it is kind of ugly, but I wouldn't say unsafe.
Anywhere near the Paramus / maywood side is safe and roomy. Saddle Brook side is ok
Stay away from the side by teaneck or Ridgefield park. Main Street especially is not nice.
