Hi everyone,

My family is looking to move from Richmond, VA to New Jersey at the end of the year and would like some recommendations on housing/neighborhoods. We have always been city dwellers all our lives but moved to Richmond due to work but with a baby in tow, it's time to settle down.

We know New Jersey is expensive but we like the mix - being close to the city yet get to enjoy nature in the suburbs, which is nice being a young family. Our budget is probably around 450 - 550k - in a nice, safe and convenient neighborhood. Not sure if that's achievable but open to all suggestions and advise - thanks in advance for your help!

Fill out the Sticky: Questions For Future and Potential Residents

Hanover (Whippany and Cedar Knolls) and Parsippany are great towns though. You haven't mentioned anything that'd make me suggest you look any farther away.

Agreed on Denville given the OP needs easy access to Parsippany and Morristown. In addition to the nice little downtown and good schools, there are several beautiful parks close by including the Tourne and Split Rock. Denville is also well within the OP’s budget.

I lived in Parsippany until last year - I’d only recommend it if the OP is Indian. Looking at real estate transactions over the past five years, at least 50% of those buying in Parsippany are Indian. The town is actually becoming much less diverse as a result. Not trying to stir the pot or get off topic, but many recent immigrant Indians strongly prefer to be among their own and not mingle with outsiders (look at all of the ‘looking for Indian community’ threads posted weekly) and someone who is not Indian might feel out of place depending on the demographics of the neighborhood. I eventually felt out of place in my neighborhood when the demographics shifted over the years. I have many Indian friends who are very inclusive and open-minded, but many of our neighbors were more traditional than my friends are and would just stare at us and most wouldn’t give us the time of day if we asked. The goal is for everyone to be kumbaya with each other despite differences, but sometimes that isn’t reality.

I visited Virginia recently in the D.C. area and Richmond too. I still live here with my parents since I am in college. I was born and I lived in NJ my entire life.

You indicated that you are young. Lucky you. I feel like there are more and more young people coming into NJ (job opportunities I wonder hmm?). You'll meet people your age out here.

I don't like the east coast, but personally NJ is a state I don't like in general. Sorry to disappoint you! To me, the suburbs have a urban feeling and urban look to it. To me, there isn't much nature in most NJ suburbs unless you head west towards the north-center part of the state (Dover for example). I live in a safe, decent, and great neighborhood, but it is not extremely close to NYC though. It is 18-20 miles away from there. For privacy reasons, I won't say what town I live in unless you privately message me. The house price range you specified is not possible in my town, but my town has low taxes than most NJ taxes due to a couple large companies in my town. The houses will be a bit more expensive than your range.

Virginia is better. Virginia is a cheaper state, has so much land, beautiful scenery, nicer people, and you can grow a lot of tropical plants in Virginia's climate. I loved exurban Virginia and Virginia's cities too. NJ can only withstand very few tropical plants. Scenery in NJ is ugly to me. Plain drab oak trees.

Are you leaving Richmond because Virginia was deleted?

Yes, answer the questions in the sticky. You did give a budget, but more information would be helpful. New Jersey is not one big blob of sameness. Providing the pertinent info will help pinpoint the best places for you to look.
