I lived in Westfield. Unless they are coming from the border, I call BS.
I live in High Bridge. Last stop, very same line. My daily commute, door to door, walking to the train (7 minutes), walking from the train to the office (5 minutes), takes me 2hrs if I get an express, 2:10-2:15 if I'm on a local.
From two different places (rented for three years, moved in with gf's parents for one before buying my house), I've walked, driven, and been dropped off. 1:15 was the longest door to door its ever taken. Unless they are adding in a subway ride uptown, or wasting time taking the train into Penn for a downtown commute, there is no way they are on the regular getting 1:30. That, or they suck as drivers. I'm not trying to be confrontational, but if you take my range - 55 minutes to 1:15, you're talking about an additional 15 minutes. Thats alot.
EDIT**
Being on a direct line doesn't help with a subway commute. So even on a direct line, their daily travels are going to be longer than a typical midtown commute.

Middlesex – White trash central.
Maplewood – Next door to the ghetto.
Dallas – Are you kidding me???
You guys are delusional -- or lying about your budget (or both).Westfield (and Cranford) are so much better than those towns you mentioned. You’re just the types that need to justify your residence by putting down others.
BTW, you can do Westfield and Cranford to Port Authority in under an hour. FYI …

Come on....have fun living in your split level in Cranford... park you BMW on your driveway b/c your one car garage is filled with all the crap that cant fit into your 1970s 1000 sq ft house...brag all you want about westfield.. its where anyone who grew up in NJ winds up b.c they cant think of another town to live in...have fun runing into has beens from high school...isnt it next to beautiful Rahway and Clark??? Last time I checked.. white trash....and high security prison...
Im sure you have a beautiful 5000 sq ft mansion on your .25 acres in westfield but dont be cruel about other towns you know nothing about... your kidding yourself.... in the relm of things westfield could be the low income white trash town compared to Alpin or Saddleriver... have fun getting parking for the westfield train.. if you are in walking distance you live in a shack...

Enjoy the white trash around you ... sounds like you fit right in.

ok, both you and E-town are a little out of control...but question.
didn't you ask for opinions on the people in monroe and you yourself mentioned "trashy people"? and e-town gave his opinion and now you cry foul?
if you don't want opinions or terms like "trashy" used - don't bring it up.
btw - i have no opinion on this subject. i don't live in union or middlesex county.

I'd certainly say they are.

I do (As if that would be a surprise).
E-TOWN, your comments aren't entirely wrong, but they are a bit of an exaggeration. Everyone is looking for different things, so you can't say that one place is better than another, just different. Its priorities.
sydney66.... is just plain wrong. 1000sq ft homes is not the norm in Cranford or Westfield, Clark is definitely not white trash - prices are comparable to Cranford, Fanwood, etc, but without the train station, and Rahway does NOT!!!!!!!!! have a prison. I hate repeating that so often. I wish people would just know the truth before they begin their blurting.
Oh well, now I'm rambling. I'm done.

LOL - may I quote you in your first post:
"We are upper class NYC folks who really thought we would wind of living there but I was so unimpressed with the home selection.. some areas looked like Hazlet NJ and lower income ... a lot of split levels and just lame houses."
ah...it's all in fun. stick around, think of it as your initiation!

I think you upset people up more with the fact that you have a 1 million $$ budget, than what you had to say about whatever town. I have witnessed it on a few occasions. People tend to be less than friendly if you state you are looking for a larger house on a large lot. God forbid, you do not want to be up your neighbor's a$$! Now, if you were struggling to make ends meet and only have a $400,000 budget, people would be more than friendly. Anyway, good luck, it sounds like you found a great house. Don't mind the haters!
