Hi everyone! My husband was recently offered a position in Carteret, NJ. We are born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and don't know where to start. I am not sure what neighborhoods are considered "good" but would like some insight on neighboring cities. I have answered the "Moving to New Jersey" below..
Thank you for your help, I look forward to hearing your advice

Where are you coming from? Los Angeles, CA
Why are you moving? Not Sure
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? Carteret, NJ

Will you buy or rent? rent
What is your budget ? Not sure yet.
What kind of place are you looking for? home or apartment

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Spouse and toddler
Do you need/want good public schools? yes, please!

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc)
definitely families with young children, safe, and big yards!

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc) safety, family oriented, outdoor activities.

Well, if you want "good" schools, then you have to forget about living in Carteret itself, or Woodbridge Township, Rahway, Linden, and Perth Amboy--which are the closest towns to Carteret. Some towns to consider include Clark, Cranford, and Westfield, but without knowing your rental budget it is impossible to know whether those towns would be financially feasible for you.

I'm sure that this reality isn't unique to NJ, but--without doubt--the towns with better schools will also have higher rental and home purchase costs.

Thank you for that clarification.
In view of your stated rental budget, I think that you can comfortably look at towns like Clark, Cranford, and Westfield.
