NJ license laws are stupid and paradoxical. All rental car agencies allow you to drive a car with a foreign license but the MVC does not recognize licenses from other countries. The written test is so tough but if u see how people drive here u will wonder whether MVC is really testing their citizens or blindly issuing. They are racists to say the least.Anyone form India Regional Transport Office reading this: please stop allowing US citizens to drive in India. Make them take all tests possible; let us see if these US people can drive in India? They can't even drive straight on these wide roads !

If I could give you a negative rep, I would. This is one of the most ignorant posts I have ever read.

by law u cannot drive more than 30 days using IDP.
whats wrong in written and a road test? the rules and regulations are different in both countries.
they will test if you know how to parallel park. many fail that in the road test.
also indians drive on the other side of the road -- they definitely need to prove they can drive well in us.
in my experience people people who don't drive in india and learn here do better compared to people who drive there and then come here.

I dunno, drivers in India are wicked. They'll calmly stick a 6 foot wide car through a 4 foot gap b/w two busses and still make it through.

You know, if you are so unhappy in NJ you can always go back to India.
It amazes me how so many want to immigrate to the US, and then do nothing but complain because it's different from "their country." Immigration is a privilege. It is not a right. The sooner people figure that one out, the better off we'll all be.

viralmd, the advice you are getting is correct. Even if we in America move to another state, there are rules for THAT state which are different; some laws are different, signs, etc. We end up with a limited amount of time to get a valid license for that particular state all over again.
Even if you have an INT'L license of some sort, you still need to take all the appropriate examinations (driver/written) that anyone else does for a first time license. Your Indian license carries no weight over here.

NO, you don't. We just moved to Florida, got our FL licenses the day after we moved, and no test was required.
