Default verona

Do Verona and Cedar Grove (in northern nj) really deserve the high rankings they got? I spoke to some people who have lived in NJ for decades and their take on these 2 communities was neutral to moderately negative. One even joked that the mob might still be active there.

So, whats the skinny on these 2 towns? I would appreciate if you can share both positives/negatives.

Both are great towns with great schools. I know people who live in both and are very happy there.

Cedar Grove and Verona have a hefty Italian population which is why you would have heard the rumor that the mob is still active there. Both towns are beautiful, just crazy expensive.

i lived in cedar grove awhile ago and *really* liked it - cute, but close to everything. when we were house hunting we looked there and the taxes, for essex county, were very low (not sure that's the case now). the mob? maybe, but that wouldn't prevent me from living there.

i cant believe that steriotype STILL????? Italians are not all in the Mob, and if they were, i doubt they would live in Cedar Grove or Verona--with all that money, i am sure they would find "nicer" places to live. where do people get this stuff?

Thanks for your replies. My wife are I are looking for starter homes, and these 2 places are on our list.

The one drawback we noticed was that the nearest train line is a few miles away (and driving to MSU/Little falls makes no sense since its in the opposite direction). Do people park and ride train from bay st station?

There isn't all that much parking at any of the Montclair train stations, and I'm sure there are waiting lists several years long. Your best bet is to take a bus. DeCamp has an express bus from West Caldwell that runs through Verona. I'm not sure which services are available from Cedar Grove (Lakeland maybe?). DeCamp's website has schedules: Commuter Services
