Hello, I may be making a trip soon to Chicago Illinois by car. I've never done this before, except once FROM there on the rails. I know all the highways are around here.. 78 West, 280, and that 78 all the way out will go through Ohio and that short little stretch of West Virginia if I remember right, then that would be 65 North from Indy... also, since New York wouldn't enter into it, maybe someone has driven this before.
Take Interstate 80 west across upstate Pennsylvania to Youngstown, OH; it's vary safe and there are a number of small college-centered communities (Stroudsburg, Bloomsburg, Lewisburg, Clarion, Grove City) along the way.
From Youngstown west, I-80 becomes the Ohio Turnpike/Indiana Toll Road. To save money, many people, truckers among them, opt for US 6, 20, or 30. But again, the area is essentially rural and shouldn't be seen as threatening. The rest is just a personal decision.
The only portion of the trip possibly involving West Virginia would be a small stretch of the state's northern panhandle, and then only if you take the Pennsylvania Turnpike via Pittsburgh; no reason to do that when I-80 is available.

Is there a better way, and are there tolls?
All wrong. 78 ends near Hershey, PA, where it connects with 81.
Like others have said, check google. You can set it to avoid tolls if you don’t mind a longer drive.
We went all the way from NNJ through Chicago to Wisconsin for my step-son's graduation. Route 80 is the way. The only time I would consider taking 78 would be if you were heading up from southern NJ, but 78 goes closer to big cities while 80 is more rural.
Don't try this as a non-stop; unless you have someone to share the driving; if a trucker were to attempt this, it would be a violation of safety laws. There are plenty of safe, small towns like the ones listed above (post #3) where you can shut things down for the night.
