I had a question for people who grew up in, or are familiar with Newark.. A white relative of mine just bought a house on South 18th street. She is a single mom with a child who has no street smarts whatsoever. I am really concerned for her and the child”s well being.
Am I panicking for nothing, or is she truly out of her mind? Are there other white families in the area and how did they fare? It seems like she would have target all over her and I don’t think people would hurt the child but would people think she has money and rob her? Carjack her? Is she in danger? What will life be like for her and her son?
Some reassurance would be great, but honesty would be even better.
I mean, I can't say that every inch of S 18th St is going to be potentially problematic, but that is certainly not one of the areas that I would describe as 'not as bad as you think'. You're full on in the middle of all of the West Ward's problems in that part of town.
Thanks for the answers. I can see it would probably not be sensible to go there after dark, and forgive my ignorance in asking this, as a white guy should I even visit during the day? I’m pretty sure I would appear as a free lunch...
I wish I could have heard the conversation she had with her realtor. "This is a really up and coming neighborhood, ma'am". Lol
I been hearing this since 2010 "Newark is about to change". I think violent crime is going down but crime can still go back up, it's like a sea-saw. It's not like the criminal elements have migrated to live in a better city.

I mean, that is the only white people I have known to live in Newark.

Jerseygal raises some very good points, and I also suspect a troll.
