I'm looking for ideas on where to go for fun outings this summer with my older parents. They are a very fit and in their 70's and just starting to slow down a little. We are going to an outdoor concert with them next week but right now we are having this awful heat and no one wants to go to the beach or a gardens this weekend.

So does anyone know of a good museum or any other activity that's less than 20 dollars a head (preferably 15 or less at least with senior discount) in air conditioning. They are not foodies so restaurants don't interest them at all and they are not into spending money. They enjoy learning, comedy, physical activity, sports etc.

General ideas as well as favorite outings are welcome. They are in Somerset County and we are in Union so anything in those counties or neighboring counties could work.

I think the Montclair Art Museum is a great little space but small enough that you don't feel like you're there all day. Same with the Newark Museum. Our local library has museum passes as well, which you might want to look into. We can get to all kinds of great places like the Intrepid or the Grounds for Sculpture for free.

Mayo PAC in Morristown has some free summer shows.

So do both Rutgers and Princeton. Plus, Rutgers has the Zimmerli Art Museum and a Geology museum, and Princeton has an art museum as well.

Indoor, air-conditioned sports activity = BOWLING

Another possibility is the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.
Yes, the fee is slightly more than the OP's preferred pricing, but it should be noted that the planetarium at LSC is the largest in the entire Northeastern US, and the lighting and sound systems are second to none.

Also, depending on your location The Morris Museum. They have a fantastic music box and animated figures section. If you go make sure you get the guided tour. Also checking out your local library. The Warren County Library system has all the mentioned museums in addition to the Museum of Nat History. Also I believe that showing your library card gets you a discount at the liberty science center.

Check Fathom Events. They show artsy-type movies in regular movie theaters on specific days and times

Bowtie Theaters also have different types of movie programs at some of their locations

I second Zimmerli Art Museum, and the Princeton Art Museum (both are free.)

Zimmerli is closed all of August.

They are both very good museums. The Princeton Art Museum is larger, and has a big antiquities floor, besides a large art collection.

Princeton University Art Museum

About the Museum | Zimmerli Art Museum

If they like free events than try to get tix for a free classical music concert in Princeton this summer:
You have to get a free ticket in advance.

Since, they are fit and somewhat physically capable, a day of bowling would be great for them! Bowling alleys are everywhere in NJ!

Morris Museum in Morris Township (not Morristown) is pretty good, but that museum gets old after a while. The museum has senior prices for $7 and adult prices for $10. Thursdays are "pay what you wish" prices, but I usually just check in free on a Thursday.

The Edison Museum in Menlo Park would fit the bill.
