I wanted to find out how the commuting times have improved since the new Tappan Zee bridge being built.
Does anyone commute from NJ to Westchester with an altered work schedule like 7 to 3 or 10 to 6?
No, east and westbound are still sharing the westbound side. There are still 8 lanes to open. I think removing the EZ Pass station was more of a help than anything else.
Because everyone in this region has many cars and even expanded roads can not handle the amount of cars. Once the bridge is expanded, everyone knows about this and even more people attempt to drive through it. I believe this is called "induced demand": https://usa.streetsblog.org/2017/06/...l-ignoring-it/
Sort of, but at this point we've basically gone from 3 lanes with toll booths at either side to 4 lanes with construction zones on either side. So everyone slows to 45 before the bridge, which is going to build up traffic when people were going 70.
The same thing happens in Pittsburgh when everyone slows down in front of the tunnels. They do 70 on the lead up to the tunnels, they do 70 in the tunnels, but that one guy taps his brakes on the tunnel approach and causes a ripple effect for the next half hour.
Once both sides of the bridge are open and construction crews leave there should be a reduction in traffic but at this point it's not going to be noticeable.
