I am in process of buying a home built in the 60s. Looking for home inspector/company that works in Bridgewater area.

I can suggest:

About The House – About the House is a home inspection company serving the Northern New Jersey areas.
Or
http://pinpointeit.com/

If you have a real estate agent they should also be able to suggest some inspectors.

Don't use the ones recommended by your realtor and you should be fine

Find one who is as far away from Bridgewater as possible but is still willing to drive there

I found one company that's charging me around $900 for home inspection, radon and oil tank sweep.

Doesn't make sense to pay that much for a home inspection???? Also is oil tank sweep really necessary?

900 for all of that seems about right.

I paid $700 for a 2800sqft house + $250 for oil tank sweep

Oil tank may not be 100% necessary, thats up to you. kind of a safety precaution, cover yourself when you sell and there;s something that no one knew about

Wouldn't it be great if home inspectors could be held liable for things they miss?

This is actually correct. Real estate agents should not be recommending home inspectors on their deals. It’s a conflict of interest and compromises the independence of a home inspector. A home inspector should be selected by the buyer and based on objective good reviews from his other recent clients.

+1 to suggestions of finding inspectors outside of realtor recommendations.

I recently hired Bret from this company for a home built in the 1950s and was happy with the work. Bret patiently educated me throughout the inspection and produced a (very) thorough report that I could reference after we moved into the house.

I did a lot of research beforehand and initially took the approach of "shopping" around, which I quickly learned can be counterproductive and even dangerous for the purposes of a home inspection. This is one of the most important parts of the process and a good inspector is likely well worth a $800+ fee in many markets.
