There's Secaucus, and there's Kearny, Rutherford, Lyndhurst, etc -- the towns east of the Passaic. These are all very dense suburban, many small houses. Rutherford (and similar East Rutherford) is probably the nicest of them. They're all quite small but they do have rentals. There's a few towns just west of the Passaic (Bellville, Nutely) which are a little less dense. If you go out as far as the west side of West Orange (where there's a fair number of rentals) you can get a single family with a considerably larger back yard, but also a much longer commute; traffic is going to be rough no matter what.
You can also go north to Rte 3/46 to Clifton. That’s a big suburban town
I would be open to townhouses as well
Probably towns in Southern Bergen County near the Turnpike that would work as well
I know a lot of people who drive to JC for work. It’s not that big of a deal
Well, I think Bayonne would suffice for your needs..even Nutley
After having lived in Bayonne for 19 years, I have to say that I never heard the word "charming" used to describe that town.
If the OP wants a town that is charming, then perhaps Nutley, but... Bayonne... nope!
The guys wants a small-town, suburban vibe. Bayonne is neither of those.
I live in JC but stayed with a friend for a few days in Bayonne, there are some streets west of Broadway that are kind of far out and peaceful all the time - also neighbors know each other for years, it gave me a very nice vibe.

Yes, I worked with a number of Bayonne people. Many grew up there and stayed there to raise their own families. One woman's sisters and cousins and their kids all lived in the same neighborhood. There are nice parts. It just does not sound like what the OP is asking for.
If you want to sacrifice quaint for what would likely be a better commute look in Bayonne.
If you want a longer commute than you're probably interested in look in South Orange, Maplewood, West Orange or Union.
Looking at Zillow I was able to find listings of places to rent in all of those places that at a cursory glance look like they should be alright.
If you're feeling adventurous and commuting by car you could also look at the Forest Hill section in Newark, or some of the areas of Ivy Hill, Newark or Seven Oaks, Orange that immediately border South Orange. This is assuming that you aren't needing a 'good' school district as well.
(Full disclosure: I live in South Orange, so I know the SO/Maplewood area of NNJ best!)
