We are relocating from Maryland and do not know anything about NJ. Looking for nice areas within a 45 minute commute of Red Bank. Was looking more to the south and west as it appears the Real Estate for places north (near NY) are just too high for us. We care more about safety than diversity and nightlife. We have a 7yr old daughter and a new born so looking for advice on nice places to raise a family, good schools the usual things people raising a family look for. I have read some positive things about Toms River and Millstone but wanted to get some opinions from people vs just reading statistical data about the towns. I would say we would be looking to stay around $300k (under if possible) for housing. Any honest opinions are appreciated.
i hope you are making a wise decision by moving to a new state while not being able to afford more than $300k. i hope you have nice growth prospects, NJ is an expensive state (as i understand Maryland is also in some areas).
Are you both working? Due to HCOL most couples have 2 working parents. Also why would you sign yourself up for a 45 minute commute? Red Bank and surrounding areas are nice enough. Especially with your low budget you're not going to have the pick of the litter with towns. Maybe you should rent first.
nope - just one income. we can look at renting and we have a house to sell in MD so depending on what we get for the house that will help us out. Just wanted to get an idea about the areas. Are there any we should stay away from? high crime rates and such? Anything areas you would consider Bad or not safe?
Not really. The whole surrounding area is pretty standard middle class. NJ is very safe overall (with the exception of a few cities). I wouldn't recommend living in Keansburg or Long Branch but that's just my preference. Again not trying to be rude but $300k really limits you from getting into any upper-echelon towns so you're looking at a small-ish middle class house in a regular neighborhood. Even regular middle class schools in NJ are quite good, at least good enough. Take note of the property taxes as well.. not sure if that played a part in your $300k budget.
Thanks for your input. 300k is just a ball park for us. It all depends on how much we can sell the house in MD for - I also expect my salary to be adjusted for the difference in the cost of living so we may be able to go higher but that remains to be seen.
Also might find a few in Tinton Falls--large town with a lot of different types of housing, some in your price range, a bit closer to Red Bank than Howell.
Roselle Park is in Union County 35 mins from NYC with a Train or bus directly you can buy a fine ,safe home for under 300,000... it's a up an coming town right next to Cranford which is $$$$. A friend bought 3 years ago and their house has gone up 50,000 with a few add on's
