I live in North Jersey, and I never drive into Manhattan due to traffic and parking, so I either take the bus or train. I have no preference for either, it just depends whether where I'm going is closer to Penn Station or PABT, and if it's convenient to either location, what leaves earlier. For the answer you selected also, why do you prefer that method of transportation?
If it's just me, I'll take the train. If I'm taking kids (or a kid) I'll drive, since the tolls/gas become much less expensive than multiple round-trip tickets. Also, that usually means we're headed in on the weekend, when it's easier to find street parking.
From my town (Livingston), the drive is about a half hour during low traffic times, which is much quicker than the bus, or driving to a town with a train station and taking the train.
So I almost always drive myself, or take an Uber if I plan on having a few drinks.
I live in South Orange. If I'm 'visiting' I assume we're not talking about me commuting. Commuting is strictly by train unless there's a big enough problem to resort to taking the bus.
Now, when I'm not commuting I pretty much drive 100% of the time. This is going to be most likely a weekend and the trains just don't run that often, and I am likely not doing anything right at Penn Station so all told driving takes less time. I use the BestParking app to prepay for a parking garage to minimize costs (and time driving around looking for a spot) unless it's a situation where I think street parking is likely. I don't go into the city enough for the tolls and parking costs to add up to much in the grand scheme of things (and I do have the carpool ez-pass plan, so if there's three of us in the car we pay the discounted toll for the bridge/tunnel).
I live in Bergen Co. When I VISIT (work in NYC, bus and train 5 days/wk) I always drive and park. Fast and relatively cheap for how easy it is most visits.

Ditto. During non-committal hours the busses are infrequent and take much longer. We drive to the city nearly every weekend, we can be parked by the Whitney or met in 35 minutes from our house.
If you live in the suburbs in NJ, (if you're near a train station) Monday through Friday is usually the best. Saturdays recommended to take paths (quicker than train schedule), Sundays are fine to drive into the City as Street Parking is free, and if you're travelling during off-peak hours.
