Default Moving to New Jersey

I am moving to New Jersey in Feb. or March. I currently reside in Florida, and looking for a fairly inexpensive place to live in Northern New Jesey. I will be working in Manhattan. I do not want to have a car so public trans. is important. Single want to take advantage of the city, I can afford about $1000 for rent size is not important just want to be safe.

Sorry to LOL. But inexpensive in North NJ and near a train for about $1000 a month.

Not going to happen.

Sorry, tsmike, but MBPsr is right. We live about 55 miles northeast of the City, in NJ and I don't think there are ANY rentals to be had under $1,500. Just another sad truth about NJ...

Default Near Railroad

Just my 2cents. There are 2 fairly inexpensive towns in Central NJ which are near a train station. South Amboy & New Brunswick located in Middlesex County. Many rentals & walk to train. Just trying to help..

Don't believe people who say that $1000 1 BR apartments cannot be found in Northern NJ. They're just not looking hard enough. http://newjersey.craiglist.org is probably the single best resource for finding an apartment in Northern NJ.

There are apartments available in the $1000 range in Northern NJ. Palisades Park, Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, Ridgefield. All towns with very easy access to NJ Transit buses that go into Port Authority in NYC and all pretty safe towns.

Other towns a little further south are Cranford, Roselle Park, Westfield, Garwood, Summit, Millburn. All towns have NJ Transit train stations, where you can get the train to NYC and again, you can find apartments in the $1000 range. Look on Craigslist.

Is $1000 going to get you a fancy, modern luxury apartment? No way. But it will it get you a liveable apartment in a safe area? Absolutely.

tsmike,
You could also check out North Bergen uptown and Fairview. North Bergen is a pretty safe neighborhood and you can catch a bus from Kennedy Blvd., Bergenline Ave., Park Ave. or Kennedy Blvd. East. with an easy commute into Port Authority in Midtown Manhattan. I personally would rather live either along Kennedy or along Kennedy Blvd. East. The in between streets are much more crowded and the buses are much slower. The rent might get more expensive on the Kennedy Blvd East side because the area is more residential with homes valued a $1 mil and over because Kennedy Blvd. East has THE best view of Manhattan.
Fairview also has bus lines running through Anderson Ave., Bergen Ave. and Palisades Ave. This is a more residential neighborhood. North Bergen has buildings but they might be too crowded with not so good element living there. Your best bet would be to live in a two or three family home in either of these neighborhoods. There is also a new train that you can take but I've never been on it. It just started running like a year ago. I've heard good things about it.
People are going to tell you that living in these areas is like a war zone because they live in the suburbs and ANY urban dwelling is "dangerous" for them but that is NOT true. I can assure you that with any common sense relative to urban living you will be perfectly safe in either of these neighborhoods. I've lived in this area my whole life and even though I'm looking to get out I still feel comfortabe telling you that you'll be fine here for the type of lifestyle you want to have. You're welcome to email me if you require more info.

You might be better off finding someone with a 2 bedroom apartment who needs a roommate.

You might be able to fine a studio or a section 8 apartment for $1000 or under..but that's about it. Rahway, Elizabeth, Linden, Jersey City, Newark..all areas in NJ that are close to NYC (20 - 30 by train) and have mass transit..I'd look closer to Middlesex or Monmouth County areas. (Freehold, Howell, New Brunswick)..the commute is further but it's a little bit (and I only mean a LITTLE bit) cheaper to rent. All have bus routes to the city and there's a train station close by to New Brunswick.

Good luck!

Why do people continue this myth that there aren't any $1000 1 BR apts in Northern NJ? Is it really that difficult to look up apartments on Craigslist?

You named Elizabeth as one of the towns you recommend. Click here: http://newjersey.craigslist.org/sear...uery=elizabeth

The first apartment in the listings as of right now is a 2 BR for $1000 in one of the nicer sections in Elizabeth; clearly not a studio or section 8.

Yeah there are definitely 1br apartments available in North Jersey for $1,000 and even below that. If these people disagree they either aren't looking hard enough or are too rich to consider any towns that are a notch below Mendham/Summit/New Providence.
