Default Relocating to Northern Jersey with a Newborn

I am going to be working in Manhattan, but I don't want to live in the city itself. I have a friend in Hackensack who really enjoys it there. I just want to make sure we are in a safe area, though.

So, any recommendations? We're looking to stay around $1500 (+ utilities) for rent, but we are somewhat flexible. I'd like to keep it under $2000. A few more details: my wife is 26, I am 25. Our daughter is 2 months old. We don't party and we will have family visiting from Northeastern PA relatively often. I want to keep within a 45 minute commute (bus/train) of work.

You have so many choices. I'd recommend Cedar Grove, Verona, Little Falls, West Caldwell, Caldwell, and I could go on and on. You could have direct bus service into the city from any of those towns. Little Falls has nearby trains too that are 35 minutes into the city. Same with Montclair. Glen Ridge would also be great but there aren't a lot of apartments there. Glen Ridge has direct train service to the city too (30 minutes). You can definitely find a nice place for under $2000 a month.

I should clarify my post. I meant that you could find a place for under $2000 a month in general, not necessarily in Glen Ridge. Glen RIdge is a fairly wealthy town but I'm not positive what apartments go for there now.
I'd try Verona first, Cedar Grove and the Caldwells first. I think they would be ideal for what you are looking for.

We're going to check out apartments tomorrow, so I'll have to let you know what I think of those areas.

You could look for an apt. in Netcong and take the train from there. It is also just an hour or less to NE PA..........
I was about to say Denville, but there are not enough apartments there.........
Netcong, and the Budd Lake area have a few nice apartments.
