The only folks who "think long and hard before putting their kids in public school" are the ones who buy in-town in areas where the housing has gentrified but the school system hasn't (sound familiar???). Those of us who bought in the right suburbs have no qualms about the public schools- just like those in the right suburbs in NJ.

Bob,

Does GA have Abbott school districts like us in NJ? Where money from wealthier towns is taken and used in the inner cities to support their districts?
I've heard they don't and that is why some of the inner city schools in Ga are the pits...not just GA but for the most part most of the south

so many of these reports are not worth the paper they are printed on

many urban area schools are bad, but they are bad because of many reasons and just throwing money at them rarely solves the core issues that make those schools bad.
nobody has a system as idiotic as the abbott districts.

in many places the school districts are county wide districts which lessen the disparities NJ has with it's 600+ school districts

The US government did the study. Social Security is in very bad shape - this is not news.

They're the pits in the north, too, Kate. And it's not because of the allocated $$. It's because of the students, and the parents that are absent in many cases from the parent-teacher relationship. You can throw unlimited amounts of dollars at the cities, and nothing will change until the parents change their culture of ambivalence.

I don't believe they do- all of the districts get the majority of their funding from county/city taxes, and the state picks up the rest. I don't know the exact formulas, but I've never seen any Abbott-type programs mentioned.

As several posters above said- it's not just the south- urban districts everywhere are doing horribly, and throwing more money at the schools isn't the solution.

No I agree on that! They are just throwing money at these districts and it isn't solving the problem at all

I agree..between corrupt officials and lack luster parents these kids are doomed..almost makes me buy into that boarding school concept in Chicago..get the kids away from the parents and then being as you have no kids at home to take care of your welfare check stops

I think preventitive action needs to occur prior to this, unfortunately. That is to say, take all birth control pills off of prescription, and make them free. This is one instance where I would advocate an increase in my taxes. We'd be a lot better off if people who are merely siring babies have no ability to do so.
