Stokes State Forest YCC 1976
Hi Kin Atoms!
Well, You've stumped me. I was also in the YCC at stokes in 1976, and I also lived in Bergen County.. But who are you? I cut allot of trees, worked on streams and roofs...
Attached is a group photo from those memorable years! I've been in contact with some of the staff recently.
send me an email!
AL
Stokes State Forest became my favorite in later life, as I worked there in 1976 in the YCC. We helped with timber stand improvement, latrines, a bridge in Tillman's Ravine, and a 40 foot look out tower on the mountain next to the monument.
For me, those were the institutions I recall best.[/quote]

My only memory of Stokes State Forest was an Outward Bound Reunion weekend during the 1980s. I attended a 10 day course at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.

Pollytix,
I am the youngest fellow in the picture, I am below right from E. Uhler. I kissed a gorgeous woman on that final day, who is leaning on the gent in plaid. I am above right to the gent in plaid, who is directly below E. Uhler. I used to be called Fetus, b/c I slept so much and so easily. Does my moniker now make sense? You visited me at my house many years ago. Small world. That was amazingly important work to me, and has set a standard for a lifestyle. Who needed Walden II when there was YCC in Stokes in '76?
Be well you gentle giant.
Kin Atoms

When I was a kid, growing up in Fort Lee, we had Hiram's AND Callahan's, right across the street from each other. I had a family of 7, and we all liked different things, and we'd argue over which 'burger and dog joint we'd go to! When we ordered from Callahan's it was the ONLY time my mother let me drink Yoo Hoo- FROM A BOTTLE no less....Nobody worried that I'd kill myself on the bottle- we didn't have "juice boxes" back then...
The Carvel in Fort Lee was also another favorite place of mine, and I'd always ask the 'dipper' if they had any broken flying saucer cookies, and she would give me a handful of broken cookies....SCORE!
And Michele's Bakery in Fort Lee. Remember when you were a kid, and every time you went into the Bakery with your mom they'd give you one of those little cookies, the ones with the sprinkles on them......
And finally, my favorite Jersey Institution was "Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor" on Route 4. Every dance recital, or Choir recital, or 6th grade graduation...we went to Jahn's and we'd order "The Kitchen Sink" which was like 15 scoops of ice cream and EVERY topping they had!
What are your favorite Jersey Institutions of Yesteryear? What place do you drive by and smile to yourself????

Jenny - I passed Hirams last night! Callahans is no longer there -its a bank now (just what we needin Jersey - anotehr freaking bank....) My grandparents went on one of their first DATES in Hirams!

Tice's Farm, et. al - Every now and then I pass Tice's Corner and miss going to the farms for our pumpkin, candy apples, etc.
Alexanders - my grandma used to take us their all the time for our big outing. I used to love how colorful the building was.

I miss Tice Farms! I was distraught when it became yet another shopping center.

It is very sad. So many shopping malls and stores that I can look at and remember the farm-the drive in- the whatever -that used to be there. I know that is part of life-but it is still sad.

Oh, those were good. We used to get them there and at Nanuet Flea Market in NY too. The "Pickleman" and the guy had a shirt "our pickles make you sexy." LOL
