I am getting nostalgia of my high school days when everyone was going on their college hunt. And I am not talking about my grade when I was a senior, but the grades below me.
Have you noticed that people from NJ who go to or want colleges in the Midwest have a "certain type" of personality? They will wear Michigan hats or whatever even if they are not a senior and they act like they are laid back. I noticed that every New Jerseyan who goes to a college in the Midwest seems laid back and dress nicer. Some of them dress sportier and I bet it's because sports in colleges are not a huge thing here on the East Coast. Then you have some New Jerseyans who get overhyped about going to college in Southern California in particular because they want the "opposite" of being in NJ. Then you have some New Jerseyans who still love NJ, but they just go to Maine, Vermont, or the East Coast just for college in a "change of scenery".
Slightly off topic, but while in Reno NV for my kids volleyball tournament I noticed someone from a SoCal team with a Rutgers sweatshirt. I asked her about it and she said her daughter goes to RU and loves it. The reason being is that she can get out of bed in the AM, go to class without any makeup and wear sweats all day because "in NJ no one cares!" Made me so proud. LOL

Absolutely serious about this! That is exactly what this SoCal mother told me. Her daughter was so relieved about how so few of the RU college kids cared about fashion and makeup. A relief after the Southern California lifestyle where EVERYTHING depends on what you look like. At least for the high schoolers and college kids. That was the major impression this mother had of NJ.

My mom's from northern California and yes, people do care about looks there. Some girl from my high school went to SoCal for college. She is short, squatty, and has a rude personality and my mom told me that she would end up becoming a more rude person after being jealous of all the beautiful SoCal girls' looks. If you are going to school for modeling or acting, only go to SoCal if you have good looks or if you can at least look beautiful with makeup. That's my mom's advice basically.

The ones I bolded above don't really have name recognition outside of NJ. Princeton does (obviously). Rutgers kinda does (how many people on the West Coast know it's the state university of NJ) although it is a good school.
And fair, Wyoming doesn't compare, what with it's 700K population and all. Compared to states with similar demographics, NJ does fall short:
MA: Duh
PA: Penn, Penn State, Pitt, Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, etc.
NY: Columbia, NYU, Cornell, Colgate, Union, Syracuse, etc.
MD: Johns Hopkins, Univ. of Maryland
VA: UVA, William & Mary, VA Tech, Richmond
CT: Yale, UConn, Fairfield, Wesleyan, Coast Guard Academy
I guess my point is, for a wealthy state in the NE with 8M people, there aren't a lot of elite colleges. Which is probably why so many go away for school (although I've said before I think people should go away to experience something new, if they are able to financially.)

I remember when I was in college (in New Jersey) kids would roll out of bed and go to class literally in their pajamas. I wonder if they're still doing that.
I remember going to college at Rutgers, and then visiting other colleges. Painting the college with a broad brush, students at Rutgers were not as attractive as some of these other schools. Then again, colleges in the sunny states and private high tuition rates attract a better DNA pool.
