I’m moving to the Somerset area for work. I’m in my late 20’s and moving alone. How do I go about finding a room in a shared apartment? Are there any forums or groups specifically for finding roommates?

Craig's List might be a place to start. Spareroom.com. iroommates.com.

Also check out New Brunswick~it's close to Somerset but there are two hospitals and the train station, so many professionals choose to live in that area as well. Lots of apartment complexes and houses that have been converted into apartments.

Thanks

Do you know what the rent price difference is between Somorset, New Brunswick, and the surrounding neighborhoods? I'm looking for somewhere affordable, but safe.

You could also check the classifieds of newspaper websites.

As someone who has lived with roommates before, let me give you this advice... vet your potential roommates carefully. Make sure, at a minimum, that they have jobs and pay the bills on time. One of my former roommates, whom I initially thought was great, turned out to be a jobless hardcore pothead. He brought a bunch of strangers home one night for an all-night pot party. That was it for me.

At the next place I lived, my roommate was 20 years older than me. I was afraid to move in with him because of the age difference, but my parents talked me into it because we had a lot in common.

We turned out to be friends for life.

This may not be ideal & I know you aren't a student, but you can try www.places4students.com

I have graduate students and RU grads with full time jobs renting from me - this is in New Brunswick.

You might also find a med school grad in their residency program at St. Peter's or RWJ looking for a roommate.

Also there are quite a few new low-rises that have recently been built in NB; I see them listed on places4students. Studios, one beds, etc. are available. They aren't cheap, but they have parking garages, laundry, etc.
