I am obviously too young to know this, but did any of you remember the 1960s when I-280 was built? The construction was so interesting. They had to chop off "First Mountain" in West Orange and Orange, which had many nice victorian and historical homes and residential areas. I wish there were pics of what was on top of the mountain before it was carved. I also heard they had to build a temporary railroad to transport the mountain rubbish to East Hanover to raise the highway up a little bit since the East Hanover stretch was in a flooding zone.
There were recent posts online with drawings of various proposals such as lowering the grade to be less steep by building a tunnel through the mountain and other ideas. On an FB group, such as NorthEast Roads or similar.

Did it alleviate traffic since people had a highway and they no longer had to use local roads to get to Newark or far westward?
I agree with that poster's last paragraph, because the tunnel would have prevented the construction of an S shape which is the dangerous part of 280. 280 would be safer if there was a tunnel. Lots of people drive 90 to 95 mph on 280 and that S shaped part is so dangerous and even I go speeding down that part.
