Hello,

I recently leased a vehicle in NJ and it already had an inspection sticker given by the dealer. According to this:

https://dmv.ny.gov/inspection/inspection-requirements

I don't have to inspect my car for another year since it was inspected in NJ with less than a year after I registered it in NY state... Or so i thought.

I received a $100 parking ticket not too long ago in White Plains, NY for not having an inspection sticker.

Did I misread the inspection requirements according to DMV? Did I deserve that inspection sticker?

If not, can someone help me build an argument as to why I shouldn't have received that ticket?

Here’s the part that would indicate you are in the wrong:

“If you buy or get a vehicle from someone other than a dealer registered with the New York State DMV, you will receive an inspection extension that will last 10 days from the date of the registration.”

It’s a shame too, because for a new car they wouldn’t have actually inspected the car. They would’ve just slapped the sticker on there and kept it moving. At least that’s how it works in NJ. NY may be different.

I was actually referring to this part:

"If your vehicle was registered in another state which issues an inspection sticker, you do not need to have your vehicle inspected immediately. Your out-of-state inspection remains valid until it expires or for one year after the registration date, whichever comes first. When your out-of-state inspection expires, you must get a New York State vehicle inspection."

When does the inspection sticker from NJ expire?

"Your out-of-state inspection remains valid until it expires or for one year after the registration date, whichever comes first."

It expires four years from now. Registration for NY was done in April.

Sounds like a case of "I'll give you the ticket to be safe" where you should be able to provide proof of registration date and I think that's that.

You should just be able to respond in writing on the back of the ticket, no? This shouldn't require any time in court for you.

Happened in white Plains. Only thing you can do outside of court is admit guilt and pay.
