7 hours is an awfully long time to be sitting on a cramped bus. At that point you may as well just drive (rent a car if you don't have one). But I highly recommend Amtrak. I used to take the train between NYC and DC all the time. If you book your trip 2 weeks or more in advance you can look for "Saver" tickets which will be discounted from the normal fare. Also if you don't mind traveling very early in the morning (like 4am) or coming back late at night, those trains are usually discounted too. The train is so much more comfortable than a bus. You can get up and walk around, go to the food car, use the restroom, etc.

I've taken the bus to DC, but you need to leave out of Manhattan. It generally takes about 4.5 - 5 hours. They make 2 stops if I recall - one "pit stop" at a highway rest stop, and then once more for a drop off in Baltimore. It isn't so bad, but you'll have to go out of your way into Manhattan (check both Bolt Bus and Mega Bus).

If you can drive partially, perhaps drive to Wilmington DE and then take Amtrak from there. The drive to Wilmington is mostly a straight shot down the NJ Turnpike.

And when originating from Wilmington, the Amtrak fares to DC are substantially lower than say you were to originate from Metropark. It might be the right balance. Not pay a fortune on Amtrak but still able to use Amtrak for some of it (and avoid traffic in DC and parking) and not have to take a long bus ride.
