Trying to get to DC and return same day from north jersey. need to be there by 10 or 11am (or earlier) and would like to return the same day.

Are all bus companies the same? does it only take 4-5hours (or more?)

please share positive and negative experiences.

thanks

I don't personally know of a bus from North Jersey to D.C., but try searching the Coach Bus site. Looks like there may be one from Secaucus.

Check out Megabus and Boltbus. They both go to DC. Getting to DC from North Jersey and back in one day is going to make for a very, very long day....

These are your best options.

Greyhound goes, too, but I think it's more expensive.

Is saving money the issue? Amtrak is the best way. Or flying. 45-minute flight plus getting to and fro.

I've used all three methods, plus driving, and I vote for Amtrak.

By the way, some of the travel options may require going into the city. However, I'm pretty sure you can pick up the train to DC at Newark Penn Station, and you can definitely fly from Newark Airport to Washington or to BWI, which is north of DC in the Maryland 'burbs'.

Are there any further details you can share as to where you have to go into DC?

I second Amtrak, but it is expensive.

I take Amtrak from Newark to DC. It’s a pretty reliable 2.5 hr trip on Acela and a bit over 3 hrs on Regional.
I’ve taken Megabus from Secaucus to DC and that takes anywhere from 4 to 7 hrs.

Amtrak is worth it if you value your time?

saving money is always an option. but to fly for $600 ( i justed checked dates in 2 weeks) or to bus for $30-50 is a huge difference. Plus the time difference might not be too much if you include travel to/from airports. The only problem is if the 4 hour bus travel becomes 7 hours and then amtrak and flight make more sense - especially if arrival is time critical.

thanks.
