I'm from Wilkes-Barre, PA, and when I was young, my family vacationed at the NJ shore. I thought it heaven on earth. Despite its many flaws, I still like it. I've only been to Trenton once and to the airport in Newark.
I prefer the beaches, bays, Pine Barrens, parks, and small towns.
I am not sure most people think of Newark. I sure people associate Northern NJ with NYC more than Newark. And South Jersey is more associated with Philly, and not Camden.
There have not been much media regarding Newark nor other cities like JC, Paterson, or Elizabeth. In fact, I think Trenton has been referenced more in media. Like in the movie Broken Arrow. Christian Slater's character is asked where he learned his tactics, and he says Trenton NJ.
People really do say that other states are nicer and friendlier.
I see plenty of New Jerseyans see their cities like Newark and Trenton with disgust.
I wonder if people from Ohio and states like that see New Jersey with the same amount of disgust, at least maybe the Northeast part.
I'm wondering if people from Ohio realize what People think about Cleveland???? What disgust, Baltimore is a hell hole but Maryland is gorgeous most people are smart enough not to judge a whole state by one bad city. Quick question ,you personally know everyone in NJ to say that it's not a "friendly state"?
To the more conservative center of the country, NJ (and NY, CA, MA, etc.) is a left wing hell hole. Ridiculously high taxes and toll, too much gun control, too much government in general. I hear it used as an example of everything they don't want.

This is so true. I retired to FL and that's exactly what the people from the south and certain areas of the midwest think about NY and NJ. But you know what, that's OK because I'll take my education and ability to earn more than $40K a year any day over their conservative, low tax, everyone has a gun and a pick up truck mentality.

That's not what I'm saying.
I'm not saying that people are judging the state by just one city. What I am saying is that I feel people in New Jersey look down on cities like Newark but I feel other states are more beautiful physically and less corrupt, honestly.
I just don't really like how New Jerseyans look down on Newark when people from other states probably see New Jersey the way suburbanites here see Newark.
And also about the conservative remark the other poster mentioned, you have to realize compared to Newark even a place like Metuchen feels like Kentucky compared to how liberal and progressive Newark is (in terms of politics though not income). The same can be said about Jersey City.
