I'm taking a new job in Edison and moving from Connecticut. It's just my wife and me (and dog) and we're looking for a place to live that's a reasonable commute to Edison. We would love to be in a place with a downtown area where you can walk to restaurants, bars, etc (once they re-open). I love New Hope, PA but it's about an hour each way. Is there anywhere near Edison that has that type of vibe?

Cheers!

Take a look at Metuchen, which is a town that is actually surrounded by Edison. Its residential areas are very nice, and the downtown--while relatively small--features good restaurants and a few bars. It's not in the same league as New Hope or Lambertville, NJ, but its proximity to Edison would be very convenient for you.

I agree with Metuchen. Princeton, Cranford, and Westfield are other options. If you want to consider a more urban lifestyle, New Brunswick has a very lively downtown with lots of bars and restaurants, a theater, etc.

They are 2 completely different towns. It depends on what the OP is looking for.

I have been to New Hope, PA.
Of the mentioned, I would say Princeton comes closest.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. We're not looking for a suburban setting which is what we have now but with our kids grown and gone, we won't meet people through schools and sports. I do like Princeton but it's very pricey but so is New Hope. Also, since I'll be starting a new job, I would like an area my wife can walk around and explore. Thanks again

Add Red Bank, Somerville, and Asbury Park to your list.

I would cross off Red Bank and Asbury Park. That commute on the Parkway would be a nightmare, especially in the summer.
