West Orange, NJ
We currently live in Boonton, NJ and have plans of moving a little closer to the City b/c of my commute. The question I have is how safe is West Orange as a town. I understand that the area around Highland/Main/Park isn't so hot but how's the rest of it? We're looking around the area south of the Essex Country Club around Ridgeway Ave and Northfield Ave...
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Val

One of my friends lives in West Orange (very close to Livingston and Millburn) and he says that area is good. You should check there.

We live in Maplewood/South Orange right around the corner from West Orange. The area is great and safe. I believe West Orange has a bus that goes into the city; or you can take a jitney to the South Orange train station and hop on right into the city.

Safe. The east side (border of West Orange/Orange [save for the Gregory section, which is quite nice]), is less than desireable, imo, but other than that - WO is nice, and I feel safe enough to walk around the St. Cloud section late at night alone.

Stay away from Main Street and "down the hill" and you're fine. Taxes are bad, the worst, so not sure why you're looking there though...

Agreed on taxes. Then again, a lot of Essex has bad taxes.

We moved to the Gregory Section of West Orange because of the easy commute to NYC. You have the option of the bus or using the South Orange or Orange train station via jitney service. I leave my house at 6:45am, catch the Jitney to the train station, & I'm in Penn Station by 7:30am. I've never used the bus, but many of my neighbors do....
Good luck.
