Default Room/Bathroom Addition in Essex County

We're considering buying a fixer upper. In the long run, we'd like to add a bedroom and bathroom. What are the considerations given the weather? What's the purpose of basements and do all additions have to have one? Coming from Southern California, I just want to at least get an idea of what different challenges there might be given the cold weather, etc.

Go for it. If you mean first floor additions, they'd be built with crawlspace matching the existing foundation with no basement. Those areas would likely be colder than the rest of the house assuming there is a basement. If there is no basement, the whole house will be cold. Which is why I would never buy a house without at least a partial basement. I'm not aware of any specific weather challenges in NJ. Most homes with basements have sump pumps and certain areas flood and have high water tables. With changing weather patterns, this has become more of a problem in NJ in recent years.

Absolutely worthwhile in every way..as MoorestownResident stated.

A basement can be converted into a liveable part of the house as I'm sure you know.
