Travel in New Jersey
We are coming to New York from London(1/27-1/30) to see Paul Weller at the
Irving plaza.
On Sunday 28th Jan.We want to travel to from NY to NJ
We want to go to Atlantic city and Asbury park(A 'Springsteen' pilgramage)
and need help with the following:
What is the best way to travel (Train or bus?)
and as we plan to have a 'few beers' in the Stone pony in the evening, what are the times of the last travel services back to NY?
Any info would greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Graham.

Here's the website for NJ Transit. I'm sure someone else can give your more detailed insight; I don't use the public transit so I can't say what way is best.

Have a great time visiting!

You're going to have a tough time using public transportation to make that itinerary work. While I'm sure you could probably cobble together a bunch of bus routes to bounce you from NYC to Asbury and then to AC, you'd be taking what is an easy 2.5 hour trip down the Garden State Parkway and turning it into an all day adventure of bus hopping and waiting.
Have you considered renting a car? It would make life sooooo much easier, and likely end up costing about the same. On top of that, you could then name your own hours.

Bob.
I think you're right!
I've been checking timetables, and although possible it looks like hard work!
One more Q.
Is it two and a half hours to AC? and if so,how far back to Asbury pk and then NY?
Cheers
Graham

You should take Casino Bus to Atlantic City from Chinatown
You should take Casino Bus to Atlantic City from Chinatown, and you would be very happy! You will take N, R or other subway to Chinatown, and take the nice Casino bus to Atlantic City, which casino are you going to?
At Confucious Plaza, you can take casino bus to, say, Ballys, for $12, and when you arrive Bally's at Atlantic City, you will be given $20 token to pay plus other drinks, meal coupon ...
Atlantic City is small, so you can virtually walk to everywhere, but mostly you will be in the Casinos in this weather... There are many casinos connected by shuttle and boardwalk, so you can base on one Casino where you take bus to and back from Chinatown NYC (or you can take bus from Port Authority at 8Av 42nd St Manhattan).
By the way, if you want to go more than Atlantic City, you will be amazed to take bus from Chinatown to, say, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC ...etc. at so little, $20 round trip?
You may want to make Atlantic City Casino trip seperated by Ashbury trip, geographically they looks close, but transportation wise they are totally different.
You will bid $70 on 3* at Jersey City to get this wonderful Hyatt Regency Hotel with the best Manhattan View on priceline dot com, and eating at Vue Restaurant will make your wife or girl friend love you!!!
You can take E train from JFK Airport to World Trade Center than PATH train to Exchange Place and walk over, it is right next to it.
When you goto NYC Chinatown from Hyatt, you will take the PATH train (24 hour) to World Trade Center and walk over or take N, R Subway over.
When you go to Ashbury, you can take PATH, the other direction to Newark Penn Station (4 stops) and take bus over.
(Curtesey of my other brother who working at Goldman Sachs and sort of New Yorker ...)
Oh! he just said if you love Chinese food, you can find this wonderful Lin's Buffet at Central Ave near Canal St (main Chinatown St), for only $4 on over 100 dishes. You can pick 4 dishes and free rice and free soup. If you do not eat rice, you can have 5 dishes ...
He said he met many tourists from Europe eating there, and they told him they found it from tour guide in Europe!! So, can't be wrong!

Take the train to Newark Airport and rent a car for the day.
This way you can hit Asbury and many areas.
Hertz for example offers never lost to make your journey much better.

Guesstimating:
Manhattan to Atlantic City = 2.25 to 2.75 hours drive
Atlantic City to Asbury Park = 1.25 to 1.75 hours
Asbury Park to Manhattan = 1.25 to 1.75 hours
