First I find it weird how such a major river does not serve as the boundary for the county.
IMO, north of the Raritan River, it's 'Edison' county, and south is the real Middlesex.

In that case, what is Middlesex County, particularly the real part south of the Rarity?
Is it a suburb of NY, North Jersey, New Brunswick?
Is it METRO Trenton/Philly?

Is it where NJ becomes rural?

Then, Woodbridge Township doesn't exist, at least in your mind?

What aspect of Middlesex County do you consider to be a "rarity"?

Is it where NJ becomes rural?
There are very few areas of Middlesex County that are still rural.

I seem to recall that a great statesman uttered those words, but I don't remember which one it was...

There are some vacant tracts adjacent to the Turnpike South of New Brunswick, but once you get past those vacant tracts, you will find that the bulk of the county is suburban, with areas that are filled with huge warehouses. Rural? Nope!
