Try Red Bank , Very cool little downtown with shops . Great area and close to the shore - maybe 15minutes . Train runs right through town , although it is the North Jersey Shore line . Check it out . It's worth a trip for the day .

Red Bank is a nice town to visit but not to live in, the surrounding towns are much nicer.
Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Shrewsbury, less expensive and more affordable towns close by would be Middletown and Tinton Falls

Our price range is around 800K. Any suggestions? We have no idea where to begin looking.
Many thanks
Montclair, NJ fits your criteria - usually less than an hour's commute by either bus or train, Montclair has an excellent selection of restaurants, parks, schools and shopping areas. The Presby Iris Gardens are in bloom right now, and you can see the NY skyline from Eagle Rock Reservation as well as the newly-opened Kips Castle Park. It has many lovely homes in your price range. (So popular with families moving from Brooklyn, it's been nicknamed "Park Slope West".)
