Default What is Somerset, New Jersey like?

I will be doing an internship in central new jersey for six months and right now I'm looking at a place in Somerset to live. The rent there is significantly cheaper than other surrounding areas and I'm wondering if there is any particular reason for that.

The address is

Somerset Estates
271 Franklin Blvd. #25
Somerset, NJ 08873

Also, are there any other areas you would recommend instead around Somerville, NJ (thats where I'll be working)

Thanks in advance for any help.

NO. That's all I can say is NO.

Don't even bother looking there.

Low-income, drug dealers (a HS kid got shot a few years ago in that complex trying to score some pot - during his lunch hour, he decided to take a walk off the HS "campus") 5 families living in 1 apartment, father's day is a huge scramble getting the kids to the right daddy in the right apartment. NO.

Try Quail Brook in Somerset or "the hills" in bridgwater. Much better.

I would just look at Rutgers' off-campus housing website (google it) and rent an apartment or room in a house in the College Ave/Easton Ave area of New Brunswick. That Somerset address is pretty close to New Brunswick anyway so it wouldn't really be a further commute.

Only downside would be fratboys peeing on your front door on a Friday night, but it'd be a lot safer than that sketchy part of Somerset/Franklin Township.

Hi, first post here...

I'm in the process of relocating from FL to NJ and was considering Somerset/Franklin for rentals based on price. I went and applied at an apartment complex that has great reviews on apartmentratings.com - which speaks volumes.

The next day, this story made headlines:
Man shot by Franklin Park police in home invasion -- -- chicagotribune.com

Looks can be deceiving! I ended up finding a nice rental in Freehold Twp and boy am I glad! Good luck to you...

*Edit: I give up trying to post the URL.

Bernowt, that news story is about an incident in Franklin Park, Illinois.

That's about 800 miles away from Franklin Township/Somerset, New Jersey.

You should be a little more careful reading when you're making decisions on where to live!
