My family is relocating from Michigan to New Jersey in June due to my husband's job transfer. We have a 3 year old, 6 year old and a 9 year old and their education is the most important factor for us. My husband's office is in Islin area. We would like to buy a home in an area that has the best school district with reasonable commute (1 hr or so...) to Islin. The area should also have the potential for house prices to appreciate in the future (in the next 5 to 7 years). Also, I am an IT professional and I will be looking for jobs after we move. I would like to find a job not too far from home (say around 30 mts) so that I can take care of the kids. We have never been to New Jersey and have no clue about the areas/ real estate and the schools. Please advise. Your help will be greatly appreciated...

Regards,
Go get yourself a NJ map and see where the following towns are located. The most convienent place to live in NJ.

Basking Ridge
Bernardsville
Branchburg
Bridgewater
Far Hills
Hillsborough
Peapack Gladstone
Warren
Watchung

Not too many bargains in these town but if you want to live in the best locations, you gotta pay.

BTW my retired neighbor commuted to Iselin from Bridgewater for over thirty years.

Probably about 25-30 min. from most of those towns I listed.

Been all over the state, north, central and south including all four corners. Some very nice towns/areas in NJ but nothing compares to those towns. That includes Millburn, Summit, Chatham et al. in north, and Bridgewater, Westfield, Somerville in central. Love hunterdon county but it is a far drive to everything.

OP. As others have said You DO NOT want to live in Moorestown or Haddonfield and drive to Iselin each day.

Washington Twp/Long Valley etc. are way to far away for a commute to Iselin.

Not to mention, Washington Township? Really?

To me, it's on the edge of what I would consider a recommendable commute (even though I'm not the one who originally recommended it). Depending on where you are in LV, the commute could be 45 minutes, so it does fit into the parameters the OP stated. The traffic is really not that bad, typically.

Again, if the OP ever comes back, she needs to give a price range.

I agree but leaving early you can do it less than an hour. I did similar and farther commutes for years. Gas prices hurt more today though.

Thank you all for your quick responses...Our price range for the home is around 500 to 550K. We are open to buy either a new construction (if available) or an older home not more than 5 to 6 years in a nice town/ urban family friendly area with atleast some shopping near by within 3 to 4 mile radius.

According to Sperlings best places the cost to duplicate you Michigan house in NJ is about double.

Your probably going to have to settle for West Jersey (long commute and not the best schools) if you want to keep in your budget.
