Replacing a wall unit AC - any recs?
I have a wall-unit air conditioner that is probably 25 years old (no longer working). I would like to get it replaced, but when I've searched around online it seems like the size of the case that's in my wall isn't one of the standard sizes these days, so it's not as simple as just ordering something.
I'd like to find an appliance store that will send someone out, take the measurements and factor in the size of the room, and then handle the install of the new AC. Anybody have any recommendations for something like this, in Northern NJ?
P.S. I'll just add my own personal opinion that whoever thought of the bright idea of knocking a hole in the wall to put in a friggin' air conditioner was an idiot.

I see you need my help again : ) If there's already a hole...you may want to consider a Sanyo unit. I thought you sadi you had forced air? If so, why not just add a system onto your existing system???

When I looked at replacing our wall AC unit in NJ, i found that they were all slightly different in size, necessitating either a slight enlargement or slight reduction in the existing opening. When you buy the new unit, it should have a sleeve that slips through the wall- just make sure that sleeve is slightly less than the existing- it's far easier to reduce the opening than to enlarge it.

We buy all our appliances from See More TV and Appliance- great prices and yes they install. However they are on Route 27 in Metuchen.... Don't know if you are willing to travel that far.

Forced hot air was in the house we were looking to buy, but not sure if that's going to go through or not. This wall unit is in my current place. It's radiator heat, but no central AC and the living room has one of these wall units.
Thanks for the tips, guys.

Sorry to hear it may fall through : ( Are you still shopping? Planning on buying/moving? Re: The A/C unit, I would google the make of the one you have and see if they make a newer model with the same dimensions?

Yeah - contamination was found when the owners removed the oil tank, and while they have agreed to remediate the problem they balked at backing that up with an escrow deposit at closing, which would be held until the NFA letter issued (which I have been told would take 6 months or so). In my opinion, that's a no-brainer non-negotiable issue, so we decided to cancel the deal.
There are plenty of fish in the sea; no need to take on the potential headache of an environmental contamination without some security.

They can get an NFA letter in under 10 days if they go through the new URHOT Program... They need to find a contractor/consultant who is in the program to do the cleanup... we're working on it : )
