In all seriousness, though, my husband and I are all ready to go with buying a house but are having a hard time finding anything we like in this crazy market. I realize this is not the ideal time to be a buyer, but, this has been our plan for so long, and we are quickly outgrowing our rental.

I figure this is a long shot, but is anyone planning to sell in the near future in either Matawan or East Brunswick? We love both towns and are open to both equally. We are looking for a 3 or 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom single-family home. Ideal budget is $550,000 (or less). There is wiggle room with that budget for the right home. We are hoping to close and move no later than the end of the summer, ideally.

Note: We already have a realtor we are working with, but I am just looking to possibly get a jump on any sellers' homes *before* they hit the market. I've heard of individuals having success by posting like this, so I figured it was worth a shot. Desperate times

Why Matawan and East Brunswick but not the town in between the two?

I prefer the schools in Matawan and East Brunswick.

Sellers want to put it on market for bidding war. Most houses are sold over asking.

We gave up on Matawan, Hazlet, Marlboro and Old Bridge last year because every house was immediately over-bid way higher than they were truly worth paying for. Settled on a Sayreville fixer upper than we’ve now almost finished making our own for way less money than over-bidding would have cost us. Not to mention, over-bidding into a mortgage. Instead we have a tiny mortgage and use cash to renovate the house the way we want it.

Lots of former Staten Islanders in those towns! Have family and friends in each and more arrive every year it seems. Am getting to know Outerbridge/GSP/NJT with bits of 1/9 and 8 very well over past few decades. *LOL*

They’re beautiful towns but they’re overpriced due to hype.

Most one knows bought down there some time ago, especially before covid induced homebuying madness began. As you know Staten Islanders have been bailing out for NJ since 1980's or so.

Like yourself some younger cousins and others have been trying to bust a move down there, but find recent list prices insane. Happily they aren't getting caught up in bidding wars, they put in what can afford, and it doesn't take just walk away.

Can understand appeal though, always have. Those areas are largely like Staten Island used to be...

We bought our house in Hazlet in 2008. The estimates online were never more than about $5,000 more than we paid for it until Covid. Today it's up 57%. What people are paying for houses here is absolutely ridiculous. It is not even close to being worth these prices.

Need to account for inflation. A dollar in 2022 is worth 8-20% less than 2021.
