Default german food all gone in NJ!!

At one time my goal in life was to find the best sauerbraten on the east coast. Well we made it to VT, NH, NY, CT, MA, NJ, PA, FLA, NC, SC, DE ! Well the best was a placed called the cornerstone in FIshkill , NY, its gone now but I found a new one!!! I just got back from West Virginia and found a great place in Shepards Town, WVA. I took a trip to Harpers Ferry, hiked then came down the mountain to go to the Bavarian Inn. It was damn good!!! Too bad all the NJ German Places are gone!!! I know what a pathetic goal in life, but we had fun!!!

I used to waitress at a restaurant called the Old Heidelburg Inn in Trenton. It took some time to get the menu figured out! It used to be a very busy place in it's day so I bet their sauerbraten was good. I can't compare because I was never a fan of german food. The different wursts scared me. They have gone out of business. This was back when Trenton was a great place for Italian restaurants - Chambersburg area.

You brought me down memory lane a bit so I googled the Old Heidelburg and found the following review of the Black Forest Restaurant which apparently has connections to the Old Heidelburg where I worked. Maybe give them a try. They are in Allentown NJ I think it said. Looks like the Heidelburg burnt down over 10 years ago.

Great German Food !!

Great German food, prepared and served with care. This is a must visit for any fans of the "Old Heidelberg" restaurant that was located in Mercerville NJ. The former, long time head chef of the Old Heidelberg passed down many of the best receipts from the Old Heidelberg when he first opened the Black Forest. They are still being faithfully and carefully prepared in the same fashion today at the Black Forest Restaurant.

There's a great German resturant in Howell called "Fritzy's". We try to go there a few times a year. The food is top notch and the place is always busy. If you have not been there it's worth the trip!

I got to look that one up, I missed that one!!!! You mean there is one that I do not know, I will, thanks!! You know we used to hike the highest mountains then whole time on the way down the mountain especially when we hiked the catskills and adksI could not wait to get to the good german food!!!!! I hiked a lot of big mountain for that damn spatzel and red cabbage!!!!! Funny now the catskills are completely all kosher, and the adks are all hillybillies. Only one or two good german places left in NY state too!! One is homeyers, the other by lake george the heidelberg and one only open in the summer pumernickels. I have been to most so you gave me a new one!!!!!!!!

The Black Forest on 206 in Stanhope is excellent too (exit 26 off Rte 80). Also Germania Park in Rockaway Township/Dover has several big festivals w/ German bands, beer and foods in the spring and fall (I don't have either website offhand but they shouldn't be hard to find), it's casual and informal and kind of fun to join go to (it's outside). If I remember right, in Holmdel they have various festivals and foods (one weekend it's German food, another it's Irish, another may be Italian etc). Never went but sounds neat.
