Will be moving to NJ soon, working in Manhattan (Right at the Lincoln Tunnel). I've been searching online for some housing, really like a few areas that I've researched. Hopatcong, Flanders, Stanhope & Phillipsburg. What kind of commute would I have if I moved to any of these areas? Driving and Public Transportation? I'll need to be at my job at 5am and leaving at 3pm.
Also, what kind of daycare expenses should I expect for a 15 month old? My wife is a first grade teacher that is also a fluent spanish speaker. We will need a daycare during the school season (obviously not summers).
Going in for 5am you're looking at less than an hour for the more eastern towns you listed, to probably 1:15 from out in P-Burg. The hardest part of your ride home will be getting out of the tunnel, which could take 5 minutes, or could take 45 minutes- once you're out though, you'd have the same commute home as you had going in.
350Kish is our budget. We could do a little more, however would like to stay in that ballpark.
I don't mind an hour drive or even 1:15 hr drive if that ensures a nicer house in a nicer community. Is Easton, Pa an option for me within that kind of drive? On the map it seems to be right by Phillipsburg, Pa. I would also probably save a ton in taxes as well right?
I don't like driving commutes, fwiw. So me, I'd say get into a town that has a train station or bus route.
With that budget, you could easily pick up a decent home in my area - take a look at Clinton, Annandale, Lebanon, High Bridge, White House, etc. Even if you do decide to drive, you're right off 78, so as long as you don't go in at rush hour times, you can do that drive.
Taxes here in Hunterdon are not low, but the school systems are generally very good. What can you do taxes-wise, with a $350k house?
Driving can be a pita and stressful, not to mention expensive with gas. If you are working right at the Lincoln tunnel, look at njtransits website and look at bus schedules (train would be a plus but only on days with inclement weather as bus will be so much more convenient).
