We just sold our house in Springfield (Union County) and we are looking to move to Middlesex or Northern Monmouth County. I'm not very familiar with those areas so I'm looking for some feedback. We are looking for a 3 bed 2 bath house for under $550,000. We want to be within 30 minutes of Linden for my husband's work. We have 2 kids, ages 19 and 12. We homeschool so the schools are not important except when it comes to resale.
We have been looking for a few months and have been outbid twice in this crazy market. I would specifically like feedback on towns to avoid.
I don't know what towns to avoid but your best towns would be Holmdel, Marlboro, Manalapan, Colts Neck in the northern Monmouth county section that are within 30 minutes of Linden. All those towns would be nicer than anything you would find in Middlesex in my opinion. Middlesex county towns would all be closer to Linden than anything in Monmouth though.

Couldn't touch a home in those towns you mentioned for that kind of money. Not that size anyway not even close. Middlesex maybe some less expensive areas.

Sorry, but anything "down" Route 9 isn't within 30 minutes of Linden, unless you're leaving at 2am.

Has it really gotten that bad? I haven't lived in NJ for 9 years now but I lived down 18 in Freehold and off 9 at Wyncrest Road and I had no problem getting to Linden in around 30 minutes leaving the house around 6:30 in the morning. Rides home after work leaving Newark at 3:00 were even quicker. Coming from parts of Matawan or Old Bridge would be even a bit quicker in the morning.

I'v heard people say just getting from Manalapan/Freehood to the GSP can take 1/2 hour.
Maybe 6:30 in the morning wouldn't be as bad, but that means getting up earlier to try to beat traffic and getting into the office earlier.

I moved to Monmouth County (from Bergen County) in 2010. The traffic over that time has gotten significantly worse, and I haven't really even been home much in the past 2-1/2 years. I'm wondering what awaits me upon my return.
Depending on which part of Linden, here are some towns in Middlesex county that might be doable:
Piscataway, South Plainfield, Metuchen, Edison, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, East Brunswick.
Would avoid: New Brunswick, South Amboy
