Question about Montclair area
Im hopin to be transfering to Montclair State University in the fall but they don't have much housing for transfer students. Im a 21 year old female so would like to live pretty close to the city and my school plus want to make sure where I live is a safe area. Any help would be great. Thanks!

housing in Montclair
there's a lot of options. many people in the area have multi-family houses, or rent rooms to students. check Craig's list. good luck!

Right along Valley Road on the Montclair/Clifton border I have noticed quite a few houses that rent out to students.

I also want to transfer to MSU at some point.
Tips:
Not sure if you can rent as a transfer student to The Village at Little Falls; but I'd look into talking to someone about that (You have to be a Junior/Senior, as far as I remember).
You could also talk to someone at the university about dorm options...they may have an open spot they'd be willing to give to a full-time student. It's worth asking for either option.
I know Montclair has rentals around various places...though they're not cheap by any means. If I remember correctly, the Church Street/Bloomfield Ave area had some rentals last time I was in that area.
Or try:
Rent.com
Roommates.com - which may be more ideal if you're looking just to rent a room (these are room rentals only, as opposed to a full apartment/studio).
Craigslist.com
Apartments.com
or just crack open a phone book, and start calling around...
Good luck!

True, but if she doesn't have car, she could always take the bus (the one by the YMCA center isn't far of a walk from Church Street) that heads to MSU. Or take the same bus (in the opposite direction, of course) to Newark and transfer to a train there to get to the city.

Exactly. Good idea to check with MSU. Church St is very expensive.

I do have a car so 10-20 min drive is no problem for me. Living on campus is very expensive as well so I figured living off would not be much more if not cheaper. I'd love to live in the villages but their is a wait list from what i hear. I have a friend that is willing to house with me so im looking for maybe around 1200 a month for a 2 bed room at the highest?

Stay away from New St, Pine St, Mission St areas at all costs
For $1200, you almost have to know someone to get decent digs. And please be careful. Parts of Montclair are worse than Newark!!! The crime on the streets is out of control and the Montclair Times REPORTS HALF OF THE REAL CRIME.
I just moved from Mission, home burgularized on Dec 23 along with my neighbors. The paper only mentioned the smaller robbery, not my apartment that was basically cleaned out. Park St and up from Bloomfield Ave is all you should consider, but you have to really scan the local newspaper, Rent.com etc for good deal.
Also find landlords are SOMETIMES FLEXIBLE if they meet you and think you are responsible, but dont count on it. You may want to consider housing in Bloomfield near the college for more economical safe housing. Good Luck
