Several years ago (maybe 6 or 7) there were concerns about cancer clusters in Brick Township. I remember because my family was very worried about my sister when she got amrried and her & her husband bought a home there.
Her husband lived in Brick his whole life so he didn't take it seriously, but she did. And the first few months they lived there they drank bottled water and used Brita filters, but then they just went back to normal.
There's no way of knowing if living in Brick caused this but in May of 2005 my sister's husband died of cancer of the esophagus. He was 29 years old and never smoked a day in his life. And 6 months after he died his mom was diagnosed with the same thing.

I grew up in Little Egg Harbor also known as Mystic Island in Ocean County. I am no longer living there but I do not have cancer. I also have family there and they are cancer free. It is a nice, quiet place to live, except in the summer when the WEBS (Week End Bastard's) visit.

First, Erin Brokovitch is about a toxic sight in CA but based on a true story. I believe the end of the movie references pending litigation in NJ.
So, for the record, I live in East Toms River. I am raising my daughter here. I love it and hope to be here for a long time. As a cancer survivor myself, I would never knowingly put my daughter in harms way. This issue has come up here before and as I wrote in a previous post, I have always chosen to use bottled water even before I lived in Toms River. I recommend if you are concerned about the "cancer cluster" you google search the topic and read some of the more technical information. This can be a very emotional and personal topic and I found that reading some of the technical information on the topic made me realize that living here offers the same level of risk as living next to the Parkway or in an urban where car exhaust is greater or near a nuclear plant or near...you get the idea.

I live in East Toms River also. I have attended the CC meetings and met with some of the familys and heard the heartbreaking storys.
I honestly don't believe the cause was anything more than bad luck. Nothing has ever been proven otherwise. The settlement the familys got from Ciba Giegy and the water company were settled because it was cheeper to settle then pay for years worth of Lawyers fee's. It was a business decision.
What happened was, activisits went to the media and told them there are children with cancer being caused by a chemical company. It was like hitting the trifecta for the media....Children, Cancer,culprits.....Again, no one was ever held responsible.

Erin Brochovich movie did take place in CALIFORNIA
The statement at the end of the movie was that Ed Gessner the attorney who won the settlement for the families in Cali was representing the families in Toms River. I heard they settled a long time ago. There has been no problems since.
I live in BARNEGAT, the schools are really great. They offer so much support and FREE summer camps run by the schools. Very helpful to working parents. They are building new homes like crazy, the prices have dropped just like anywhere else. But, it's a wonderful community. The town is building a new 5 acre sports complex by the new HS. It's the nicest HS I have seen, the fields are beautiful. THe PKWY south exit ramp is being built this year.
Check out waltershome.com I think or just go to realtor.com
Good Luck with your OC search

I cannot believe some of these posts.
Is anyone really naive enough to believe that the toxicity is limited to the Toms River?
Toms River has the highest rate of Cancer in Children in the WORLD - not in the "state"
"Patty" wrote and stated Brick is just fine.
Brick has the highest incidence of autism in the world.
Am I the only one here to think this is odd?
Out of 10 families I know in NJ with dogs, ALL dogs have died of cysts/tumors/cancer.
I lived in Colorado for 5 years, Nevada for 5 years and a few other places.
Dogs don't usually die from Tumors as they do in NJ.
All these dogs didn't live in "Toms River" either.
Are we foolish enough to think Ciba Geigy is the only culprit in NJ?
15 years ago, Newark, NJ had the highest rate of cancer in the world.
Not only is New Jersey toxic from an environmental standpoint, it is toxic with it's politicians as well.
Let's stop pretending this will go away and everything is alright.
It isn't - Someone please do your homework and see where NJ stands statistically with reference to cancers of all kinds to all living things.

LOL.....Is the sky falling too? chickin little
Has anyone else had it with these alarmists who post their opinions on here and try to pass them off as facts?
At the very least post a link with some proof to back up your claims.
Did you ever hear about a place called Chernobyl Russia or Bhopal India? If not look into them and the aftermath of the disasters there.

Ocean County -is Beautiful!!
Hello! I am an Environmental Engineer, and I lived in Toms River for 20 years. The chemical plant was called TRC - Toms River Chemical and then was bought out by a Swiss Company, Ciba Geigy. There were some hazardous waste drums that were disposed of illegally in a non-hazardous landfill onsite, and there was some criminal intent in that some of the management knew it was wrong, and had others sign off on the disposal manifests.
However, this was a long time ago, and it has been remediated to modern standards. I think there are bigger risks elsewhere, and this particular area of New Jersey is spectacularly beautiful. If you haven't the opportunity to live there, it is a nice place. Not too far from Philly or DC or New York. Lots to see and do. And the air is clean as it is a coastal area, and the ocean air currents dilute the traditional Northeast Transport Region Smog.
