Anybody that have preconceived notions (good or bad) about a person based on generalizations about the person's race (or "groups within this race") is a racist because he/she does not take into account the individuality of the person, thus reducing him/her just to an stereotype that does not take into account specific family values, socio-economic factors and community relationships that define each one of us as an unique person.
The most pervese side of racism is the need to define someone not based on his/her personal traits and actions but on impressions based on flawed (because it is impossible to be aware of all the variables mentioned above for every single individual in a racial group) perceptions denying a right to each one individual value.
This is of course just my IMHO and my race (whatever it is) have nothing to do with that, just my family upbringing that helped me to see people by their specific values and not by pre-conceived notions that other have been fed without having intelectual maturity to challenge.
If you really like Tenafly you should move there this is America and everybody is entitled to live where they want (and can afford, of course) in the long run the trend is that every city will become racially (albeit not economically) diverse, perhaps today your family will be one of the pioneers but in about a generation it will be common place.
Good luck on your house hunting

Perhaps, but nothing is guranteed in life besides death and taxes. Seriously though, there is nothing wrong with asking about the social climate of a community in terms of ethnicity or race. That is their choice to ask as well and it isn't done in a way to discriminate against anyone, but to ask about such things in order to make a conscious decision to make sure they are in a comfortable position, if possible.
Where did I say that it was wrong to ask about the social climate of the Tenafly community????
CAN'T YOU READ or you are just A TAD SLOW???
