Worst in my experience-Community Memorial in Toms River. I don't know if it has a different name now but it still stinks. Friends, family and myself have had many bad experiences there.
I don't know about best but my husband's side of the family usually have pretty good things to say about The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

Morristown Memorial is great as far as I know. I was born there and lived in the area for 25 years. They have invested alot of money in that place.

Yeah, we've never had a bad experience there - all specialists we need are out of there and have all been excellent.

My daughter had surgery in both Morristown and Hackensack. Great experiences.

St Barnabas is actually in Livingston. Old Short Hills Road is the dividing line. The side that the hospital is on is in Livingston, while the other side of the road is West Orange.
I used to work there, and you are partially right. They have some of the best cardiologists around. If you need a cardiac catheterization, that is a great hospital for it. If I were to need cardiac surgery though, I would go to a guy named Dr. Conelly in St Michael's. It would be worth having to stay in a Newark Hospital. Newark Beth Israel happens to have a couple of good heart surgeons too.
Hackensack and Morristown are both decent hospitals, but I think their best asset is not the doctors, but the PR departments. They really know how to market themselves, not just with advertising, but with what we call "fluff". The doctors are not particularly better than anywhere else, but they have patient reps that are constantly checking up on you while you are there.
It seems to me that the NJ government is heading toward ridding itself of the community hospitals. They are cutting reimbursements so much that only the big centers will eventually be able to afford to stay open. I saw this already starting a barnabas when I left. More and more uninsured people from inner cities were coming there for treatment. There is nothing wrong with this, other than the fact that they siphon money away from the hospital. Medicine is the only business where more customers often means LESS money, not more. My hospital in Montclair has gotten much busier sine the 2 hospitals in Newark announced their closings. This is not necessarily a good thing for the hospital's viability. lol

Virtua in Mount Holly is a so-so hospital.
If you bring a kid to the ER, they usually fast track them. So far, I never had a bad experience bringing my daughter there or sitting there, I've seen babies come in with high fevers, they were pretty quick to give them a Tylenol supossitory.
I've gone there for myself to have a discography on my spine, horrible experience, the intern hit a nerve going in. I was on the table for about 2 hours, pain meds had worn off. I was then pushed into a hall to wait for a CAT scan, no one checked on me.
Was there back in March for pelvic pain, took 3 hours to rule out a bladder infection. They then suggested an ultra sound, I had enough & left, went to my own OB GYN.
