Hi all! I am in need of some feedback.

My husband started working in Trenton and I will begin to work in Princeton/Skillman area. I need suggestions for places to start looking.

We are interested in a 4 bedroom home with a small yard and a nice community feel. I don't want it to feel too "rural" yet would like a town/area where the kids could go out and play.

Also of course I would like a nice school system - our kids are not there yet but in a few years will be.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Hunterdon county could serve your purposes. Also Mercer county in Lawrenceville area.

Princeton or Montgomery, both great school districts. Princeton is pricey but has a great community feel, Montgomery has a bit more rural feel to it. This would be a nice commute for you and about 20-30 minutes into Trenton.

Cranbury, West Windsor or Plainsboro, again great schools, you would have to deal with the traffic crossing over Rt. 1 and a trip down Rt. 1 South (mainly a reverse commute) into Trenton.

Before you go house-hunting in Mercer County, prepare youself for the sticker shock of seeing some overpriced houses that aren't so nice.

Mercer County starts at the Delaware river at Trenton, then I-95/295 is like a "beltway" around the Trenton area, like a "D" shape, a few miles outside of Trenton. The areas outside of 95/295 are nicer. With very few exceptions, the closer you get inward toward Trenton, the worse the area.

Also, your property and school taxes will be considerably high no matter where you go int he area.

I live just across the river in Bucks County, PA and commute to a suburb outside of Trenton. Home prices and taxes here are still high, but somewhat better than in NJ. And the commute to Trenton is 5-10 min. To Princeton about 20-25 min.

If you go to Realtor.com website, try NJ zip codes like 08628, 08648, 08550, 08540, 08525, 08530 to get a feel for the range of what's there.
If you want to look across the river in PA, try zip codes 19067, 18940.
You will see the full range from shack to mansion.

I recommend Plainsboro, Pennington, and West Windsor. These are all great towns with excellent schools.

You may want to look around Robbinsville too.

Check out Hightstown and East Windsor. I hear the elementry schools are good, but the high school is average. (?)

I always recommend Robbinsville, it's a great town, good schools, very low crime rate. I commuted to Trenton and my husband commuted to Princeton while we lived there, it was an easy commute. I think my drive was 18 minutes and his was 25 minutes.

Try Moorestown for getting to Princeton and Trenton. Far better than anything in Mercer County, about on par with Princeton except you also have easy access to Philly.

If you're looking for High School, def keep within Princeton, West Windsor, Plainsboro and Princeton Junction. Taxes are high for a reason. Especially Princeton/West Windsor.
I grew up in Princeton Junction/West Windsor and currently in Pennington.
Pennington is a much quieter area than Princeton, West Windsor, Plainsboro and Princeton Junction.
These areas had been well over developed and at times the traffic is just ridiculous. Trying going to wholefoods/trader joes on weekend... you'll see.
Pennington is by exit 4 on Route 95, it's quiet and still in development type of feel.
