I am starting to like Woodrigde and Hasbrouck Heights more and more. They have a old time quality to them and neat as a pin. I see very very little garbage in these towns. They have a charm that is just unexplainable. I am seeing things alot different having grown up and lived and parents both my and mother in law live in northern. The tudors and old art deco type houses are really cool !! There is old type hollywood california feel to the streets of HH. I cant explain it, its just got a great old movie time feel. I am liking southern bergen if you get the right town it can be a gem. I never would have thought that 5 years ago.

What town are you in? There are no towns in S. Bergen that can remotely compare to the worst areas of Newark my friend.

I agree Morse. While upper Bergen is bucolic and lovely and has the best schools, etc.... there is also a very real "snob" factor there. Not everyone - I'm not generalizing - but it is different. And, depending on the town, there is no real "neighborhood" feel. I know what you mean about HH and Wood-Ridge, they are very neat and clean. Homes are very well maintained. While I like Rutherford too, Rutherford is a hodgepodge. You have amazing Victorian Mansions w/ immaculate grounds and you have run down old homes that look like they should be condemned. Admittedly, less of the later since the late, great housing boom.... but still. Rutherford is nice but has a seemy underbelly.... HH and WR, not really.

Amen!
Northern Bergen has the money & the mansions, but lacks the fundamentals of contemporary America.
Plain & simple........You can't avoid & ignore brown people anymore in this country.
Get accustom, they are only growing in numbers. Become acquainted, because they will be your business partners, neighbors & your child's playmates in the next 20 years in the good 'ol U.S of A.

I never said that at all, I think you read my post quick. What I said basically was that I know I know my area can be worse BECAUSE I have been to the worse areas of Newark, and so forth - which if you didn't understand me meant that I have been to the worst areas of bergen county several times, that I know where I currently am doesn't compare BUT it sure ain't anything beautiful either. Get me?

truthfully i think both counties have its good and bad but south bergen county wins. diversity, more friendly neighbors, easier access to highways, and downtowns!!! there are too many kids who act tough in north bergen, it's a shame ...

I know this is an old post but I definitely have to go with Northern Bergen County...the schools alone are a great reason. They are way more suburban, which is something that many families are looking for...you have great towns like Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Westwood, Ramsey, Allendale and Hillsdale, all with walkable downtowns (some smaller than the others). You have the super-rich (think Alpine, Franklin Lakes, Saddle River and Old Tappan) and the middle class (think Westwood, Midland Park, Emerson, Waldwick, New Milford, River Edge, Dumont and Bergenfield, though schools in Bergenfield, New Milford, Waldwick and Dumont leave much to be desired). Then you have in between...Oakland, Hillsdale, Washington Twp and Mahwah. Though most diversity in northern Bergen is between white/Asian, as opposed to white/hispanic/black/asian, it is still relatively diverse when you compare it to other parts of the state (Hunterdon County). Some towns in southern Bergen are nice but as a whole I definitely like Northern Bergen County more than southern.
