When I was a kid in the 70's it was a huge treat to go have dinner at Zaberer's, a restaurant down near the shore. For a small kid, the ride was extremely long, but worth it. I have great childhood memories of the place.
I was under 6 years old, but my memories include:
1. Getting a paper umbrella in my drink (sometimes a Shirley Temple if I was very good on the car ride).
2. Delicious shrimp cocktail and seafood dinners! (I was a weird kid who would eat grownup food)
3. The violin player who would go from table to table and take requests.
4. Watching my Dad and grandfather eat dessert that was "on fire!" It was some kind of flambe, but I was still very impressed that they could eat fire!
5. Eating clams on the half shell long before I ever had a biology class (see #2 above).
6. All kinds of cool things to look at, inside and outside the restaurant.
Does anyone else remember Zaberer's???
They apparently don't exist anymore. I am in my 30's. but I'm sure people a little older have lots of memories of this place.
Absolutely do, I also remember Zabererized drinks, HUGE.
Does anyone know when it closed. My memory seems to think it was before casino gambling. Gambling started 1976 or so, (I know the real answer is out there, this is only an estimate from a fogged memory).
Zaberer's was in Wildwood. Closed around 1991. Had billboards for miles around advertising it....Famous for their pound cake. Big, noisy, fun place with good food and lots of it.
I vaguely remember as a kid that before you got your menus they'd bring you rye bread with chopped liver and wondering why anybody would ever want to eat that stuff.
I remember the planes flying advertising the restaurant but we never went. Big fan of two mile landing right outside the cape may wildwood bridge.
Ah, yes, another great restaurant.
